2 FREE Lessons Daily from TallySchool

If you’re a GST-registered business required to issue e-Invoices, TallyPrime makes the process of generating IRN (Invoice Reference Number) and printing the QR code very simple.

Once your e-Invoicing is set up in TallyPrime, you can automatically send invoices to the government portal (IRP) and receive back an IRN + QR code.

Let’s understand the process step-by-step with a simple example.

1. What is IRN and QR Code in e-Invoicing in TallyPrime?

  • IRN is a unique number generated by the Invoice Registration Portal (IRP).
  • QR Code is a digitally signed image that contains important invoice details like:
    • Seller & buyer GSTIN
    • Invoice number & date
    • Invoice value
    • IRN

These are mandatory to be printed on all B2B invoices once e-Invoicing is applicable.

2. Example Scenario: Generate IRN and Print QR Code in TallyPrime

Let’s assume:

  • Your company is Shah Enterprises based in Gujarat.
  • You sell goods worth ₹1,00,000 + 18% GST to ABC Traders in Maharashtra.
  • You create the invoice in TallyPrime.
  • Now you need to generate the IRN and print the QR code.

3. Step-by-Step Guide to Generate IRN and Print QR Code in TallyPrime

Step 1: Create a Sales Invoice in TallyPrime

  1. Go to: Gateway of Tally > Vouchers > F8 (Sales)
  2. Fill in:
    • Customer: ABC Traders
    • Item: e.g., Laptop (Qty: 1, Rate: ₹1,00,000)
    • Tax: IGST 18%
  3. Press Ctrl + A to save.

Tally will prompt:

“Do you want to generate e-Invoice?”

Select Yes.

Step 2: IRN Generation

Once you select “Yes”, TallyPrime will automatically:

  • Connect with the IRP (Invoice Registration Portal)
  • Upload the invoice data
  • Retrieve the following:
    • IRN
    • Acknowledgement No.
    • Acknowledgement Date
    • Signed QR Code

You’ll see a message:

“IRN generated successfully.”

These details are now saved in Tally against that invoice.

Step 3: Print the Invoice with QR Code and IRN

After IRN is generated:

  1. Go to: Display > Day Book > Select the Invoice
  2. Press Alt + P to print
  3. In the print preview, you will see:
    • QR Code at the top-right or bottom of the invoice
    • IRN, Acknowledgement Number, and Date

If you want to configure the position of the QR code:

  • Press F12: Configure > Show QR Code
  • Choose the placement and size

Now print the invoice — it’s IRN-compliant and ready to share with your customer.

4. How to Verify IRN Was Generated in TallyPrime?

Go to:
Gateway of Tally > Display More Reports > Statutory Reports > GST > e-Invoice Report

Under the Uploaded tab, you can:

  • See a list of invoices for which IRN has been generated
  • Click on a transaction to view:
    • IRN
    • QR Code (image)
    • Ack No. and Ack Date

5. Bonus Tip: Reprint or Re-generate QR Code in TallyPrime

If you missed printing the QR code earlier:

  1. Open the invoice (Alt + G > Day Book)
