When recording purchases under GST, the assessable value plays an important role.

GST is calculated on this value, not just the base price of goods or services.

Sometimes, the assessable value of a purchase may change because of additional costs like freight, loading, unloading, or packing.

These costs must be included if they are charged by the supplier and are part of the transaction value.

TallyPrime allows you to adjust the assessable value correctly, so your GST is calculated accurately and reflects the right value in your returns.


1. What is Assessable Value in GST?

Assessable value is the value on which GST is calculated.

It includes:

  • Base price of goods/services
  • Any additional charges levied by the supplier (packing, transportation, loading, etc.)
  • Excludes GST amount itself

If the assessable value is not entered correctly, GST calculations will be wrong, and your returns may mismatch.


2. Example Scenario: Assessable Value Change of Purchases Under GST in TallyPrime

Let’s assume:

  • You purchase machinery worth ₹1,00,000
  • The supplier also charges transportation charges of ₹5,000
  • GST is 18%

In this case, the assessable value = ₹1,05,000
GST = 18% of ₹1,05,000 = ₹18,900
Total invoice value = ₹1,23,900

3. Step-by-Step: Record a Purchase with Change in GST Assessable Value in TallyPrime

Step 1: Enable GST in TallyPrime

  1. Go to F11: Features > Statutory & Taxation
  2. Enable Goods and Services Tax (GST): Yes
  3. Set your State and GSTIN
  4. Save with Ctrl + A

Step 2: Create Ledger for Additional Cost (Transport, etc.)

  1. Go to Accounts Info > Ledgers > Create
  2. Name: Transportation Charges
  3. Under: Indirect Expenses
  4. Set GST Applicable: No
  5. In option Include in assessable value calculation for GST? → Yes
  6. Save

Step 3: Create Stock Item (if not already)

  1. Go to Inventory Info > Stock Items > Create
  2. Name: Machinery
  3. GST Rate: 18%
  4. Unit: Nos
  5. Save

Step 4: Record Purchase Voucher

  1. Go to Vouchers > F9: Purchase
  2. Choose the Supplier Ledger
  3. Enter Invoice details
  4. Add Machinery stock item:
    • Qty: 1
    • Rate: ₹1,00,000
  5. Add Transportation Charges ledger:
    • Amount: ₹5,000
    • Tally will include this in the assessable value
  6. Add GST Ledgers (CGST & SGST or IGST depending on party’s state)

Tally will now calculate GST on ₹1,05,000.
